Family Support Toolkit

The family support tool kit is a resource to help those who work with parents with psychiatric disabilities understand their abilities and their needs. The document contains extensive technical assistance plus online resources and evidence-based parenting programs to empower providers to empower parents. Hundreds of parents and providers were interviewed to determine what information needed to be shared.

About the Parents with Psychiatric Disabilities (PWPD) Initiative:
PWPD was initiated to provide a forum for parents with psychiatric disabilities. The effort quickly evolved to include all stakeholders who were working with families where one or both parents were living with psychiatric disability.

The Mission of the project is to raise awareness of parenting strengths and issues among providers of mental health services, to train mental health service providers in treatment issues, and support needs of parents with serious mental illness; facilitate networking among advocates for parents diagnosed with serious mental illness for the purpose of identifying gaps in service, and developing creative strategies to meet parents’ needs.

Project Goals are as follows:
* Enhance advocacy, support services, and self-help resources
* Identify and develop resources for parents and their children
* Raise awareness of the strengths and needs of parents among professionals and policy makers
* Advocate for parents with psychiatric disabilities within service systems and government entities
* Convene a statewide advisory committee representing parents, providers, policymakers and advocates
* Make available materials to support this effort.
