Building Bridges
This series details dialogues among stakeholders, including consumers, mental health-related providers, and policy-makers, to identify strategies to promote recovery and wellness for people with mental health problems.

Participatory Dialogues: A Guide to Organizing Interactive Discussions on Mental Health Issues among Consumers, Providers, and Family Members - This guide provides information about how to develop and facilitate participatory dialogues. Various models of dialogues are discussed. Topics include the selection of a title for a dialogue, obtaining speakers and venues, and the management of participant logistics. The guide also addresses how to promote the event and to conduct participant evaluations.

Building Bridges - Mental Health Consumers and Members of Faith-Based and Community Organizations in Dialogue - This report presents factors in the faith community and community organizations that promote recovery, such as a sense of community and spiritual practices, as well as those that hinder it, such as prejudice and discrimination. Participants delineated recommendations for SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services, faith-based organizations, and consumers and consumer advocates.

Building Bridges - Co-Occurring Mental Illness and Addiction: Consumers and Service Providers, Policymakers, and Researchers in Dialogue - T his report highlights recommendations that promote recovery for people with co-occurring disorders. Specific emphasis is given to stakeholders’ issues related to systems change, including partnerships and increased understanding, holistic care and services, workforce development and peer supports, reduction of prejudice and discrimination, and reimbursement re-design. Dialogue findings include factors that promote or hinder recovery of persons with co-occurring disorders, i.e., mental illness and addiction, and impact those who create, deliver, and study systems of care and services. The publication also includes references and resources for additional information.

Building Bridges - Consumers and Representatives of the Mental Health and Criminal Justice Systems in Dialogue - This booklet presents issues with which mental health consumers contend in the criminal justice system, such as diversion from incarceration, community re-entry, and prevention. In addition, factors at both the consumer and systems levels—ones that promote or hinder recovery from mental illness—were noted. Recommendations include those in the areas of policy, program development, and training and education.

Building Bridges - Mental Health Consumers and Primary Health Care Representatives in Dialogue - This guide reports discussion among mental health consumers and primary health care representatives regarding the availability, affordability, and quality of medical and mental health services; the interaction of general health and mental health; cross-training in primary and mental health care; and more. Recommendations include communication and engagement of mental health and primary care providers in integrated care, stakeholder education, and accountability.

Building Bridges - Mental Health Consumers and Representatives of the Disaster Response Community in Dialogue - This report provides recommendations made by mental health consumers and representatives of the disaster response community, stressing the importance of the relationship between mental health consumers and peer support specialists. The factors that promote or hinder recovery are explored. Dialogue recommendations include the engagement of mental health consumers in disaster preparedness and the promotion of peer support services in the aftermath of disaster. This publication also includes references and resources for additional information.

Building Bridges - Mental Health on Campus: Student Mental Health Leaders and College Administrators, Counselors, and Faculty in Dialogue - This guide highlights elements that foster or hinder recovery in the campus setting, such as personal-level and system-related issues that impact recovery. Dialogue recommendations include improving campus culture, facilitating access to information, and managing the expectations of the campus for the mental health system.
