HISTORY
The Edna Aimes Scholarship is awarded annually by the Mental Health Association in New York State, Inc. (MHANYS). It is named for Edna Gentry Aimes, who bequeathed funds to MHANYS for the scholarship in 1965. Ms. Aimes was a pioneer in mental health work in Columbia County. She served as the charter member and first president of the Columbia County Mental Health Society, and as regional vice-president and secretary of the board of the New York State Mental Health Association.

These scholarships are open to juniors, seniors, and matriculated graduate students attending school in New York State on a full-time basis, and majoring in a mental health-related field to prepare for a career in mental health. You must be a New York State resident and demonstrate financial need.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIPS
Two individual scholarships for tuition in the amount of $2,500 apiece, plus travel expenses up to $100 for scholarship winners to attend MHANYS Annual Awards Dinner in October 23, 2008.

PURPOSE
To encourage the education of individuals to assist in the prevention and treatment of mental illnesses, the promotion of mental health, and the empowerment of adults, children, and families whose lives have been affected by mental illnesses.

QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED
1. Must be in the third or fourth year of a college undergraduate program, or matriculated in a graduate program in New York State; attending full-time, and majoring in a mental health-related field in preparation for a career in mental health as outlined in the Purpose
2. Must be a legal resident of New York State

MATERIALS NEEDED (Must submit 2 copies of complete information as listed below)

  • Completed application form
  • Personal statement in 500 words or less
  • Completed 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Statement of current means of support (e.g. scholarship, work study, employment, family)
  • Work experience, including a copy of current résumé
  • Extracurricular activities and/or community service
  • One copy of college transcripts (mailed to MHANYS directly by the college)
  • Two personal recommendations from people who know you as a college student, or from mental health-related employers (mailed to MHANYS directly by the recommendation writer)

Deadline for application submission: MAY 2, 2008

** NOTE: Please follow directions carefully. If we do not receive TWO COPIES of all materials, the application will not be considered for the scholarship. **
